4 Steps To Building Project Success

Instant gratification. Whether it’s a text from your smartphone or a meal from a fast food restaurant we are programmed to get things without delay. In fact, we want things yesterday. But our impatience can work against us. In our haste we often leave out important steps. It can happen with anything. But, when starting a building project, like a new garage, hobby building or a home, patience and planning are a virtue.

A Successful Building Project

Whether this is your first building project or if you have previous experience a few planning steps will save you time and eliminate potential issues. Ensure it’s a success by taking these 4 steps.

1) Work With A Building Design Professional

You don’t know what you don’t know. And when it comes to committing the thousands of dollars it takes for a building, that’s not good. An effective building design professional will help you get more out of your investment. There may be some upfront costs but they will likely result in long term savings. Plus, if you consult a builder that employs a professional designer, they will often credit those costs if you select them to construct your building.

2) What’s Your Budget?

There’s nothing worse than the question, “what’s your budget?” If you aren’t sure what a building costs, how do you know? And, if you throw out a dollar amount that’s to high, will the builder increase the cost to make it fit your budget?

But, without knowing the dollar range that you are comfortable spending, it’s impossible for a designer to recommend a building that fits your needs. A good builder provides cost options that meet various budget constraints. This review will help you lock in on key building features and costs. But keep in mind, these are just general ranges. To get a specific project cost, you need to hammer out the details.

3) Understand Your Property

A designer will investigate your property and make sure it can accommodate the building you envision. Not every plot of land is ready for a small garage or a big house.

There are many potential challenges. For example, is there an established ingress or egress to the property? If you are building on land that you already occupy your access to a road or highway is already established but, will the new building create other access issues?

Only certain slopes and areas on your property are suitable for a building. Trees may need to be removed in order to accommodate the building you envision. Unfortunately, moving or removing trees can create unexpected costs.

The slope of your land is another consideration. All property has a slope. It may be subtle but even if you can’t see it, the slope affects how or if you can construct a building. Most land can be graded so your building is feasible but it will add to your costs.

A building designer will identify these issues and provide solutions to limit any potential budget increase.

4) Take An Active Role In The Process

An effective building designer will ask questions that make you think. Questions that you may not have thought about previously. The questions that will help him or her create a better plan. One that truly meets your needs.

But I’ve never met a designer that reads minds.

Meetings and discussions about the budget, size, shape, features and more will ensure the best outcome.

Plus, a building project is rarely a one person decision. Involve all decision makers and influencers, especially in initial conversations. New information, after plans have been developed, can derail the project or create unnecessary costs. Input from all parties is a must.

It may add a few weeks to your project but taking these steps allow you to uncover challenges and resolve issues before they create unnecessary problems or additional costs. Working with a professional who can advise and recommend options, based on their knowledge and expertise, will improve the outcome.
